I was a little surprised it isn't leather, but. . .
"I love leather and had assumed that this case was leather. However, the insert explained that the leather tanning process introduces chemicals that can degrade the sundial so I was pleased that Kala Sundials put that level of care and attention to detail in their products to protect my beautiful sundial. Thanks. My smart watch battery is flat this morning so I might take the sundial out in its case while I work in the back yard so I can check the time :)"
